Recipe: Make Strawberry Juice!

  • Make a strawberry juice just like the traditional drink served at powwows.
  • You will need 2 pints of fresh strawberries, 2 tablespoons of sugar, a fork or potato masher, and a 1 gallon pitcher.
  • Remove the leaves from the strawberries and slice them lengthwise.
  • Mash them up! Use the potato masher or fork to mash the strawberries.
  • Mix the sugar with the mashed strawberries and put the mixture in a pitcher. Fill the rest of the pitcher with water. Stir and enjoy!

Hands-on Activity: Watch and Write

Skills: video comprehension, writing

Materials: Watch a Video skill sheets, clip boards, pencils, screen for students to watch

  • Students analyze and reflect on a video about powwows.
  • Provide each student with the Watch a Video skill sheet and a clipboard. Review each question and prompt on the sheet. Students can begin to share predictions or ask questions if they need clarification.
  • Have students sit around the screen to watch the video. Turn on the video "Let’s Go to a Powwow!" from the issue's website.
  • Play the video once before having students return to their seats and begin filling out the skill sheet. Play the video a second time for students to reference as they work. Pause the video as needed to review new vocabulary words, allow time for students to write, or have a class discussion.
