Paired Text Suggestion: No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons) by Jean E. Pendziwol

  • If you invite a dragon to your house for tea, it might sneeze and cause a fire! But this family knows just what to do in case of a fire. This story reviews fire safety in a fun but serious way!

Phonics Focus: i_e Makes the Long i Sound

  • Review what happens to vowels when letter e is added to CVC words.
  • Have students find the word fire in each box. As they are found, ask students to underline the i and e in the word. Practice reading the word.

Hands-on Activity: Fire Safety Scavenger Hunt

Skills: fire safety

Materials: Fire Safety Scavenger Hunt sheets, clipboards, pencils

  • Students will discover and identify all the fire safety items in and around their school!
  • Before beginning the activity, discuss the different items on the Fire Safety Scavenger Hunt sheet. What does each item do? Where might you see these items?
  • Then provide each student with a clipboard and pencil. Begin walking around the school and have students be on the lookout for items from the list.
  • As volunteers find an item, the group can stop and each student can make a tally mark in the box.
  • Return back to the classroom and discuss the findings: What did the class find the most of?
