Paired Text Suggestion: David Goes to School by David Shannon

  • Join David as he navigates his school day and engages in very silly behavior. The colorful illustrations will be sure to make your class laugh!

Phonics Focus: Long a sound

  • Tell students that long a can be spelled in different ways and today you will hunt for these spellings: a, ey, ai, ay, and a_e. Have students look in the article for different words that have the long-a sound. Make a chart or grid with the various spellings for a long-a. Tally words as they are found. How many of each kind of spelling can the class find?

Hands-On Activity: Make a David

Skills: fine-motor, writing

Materials: Make a David template, construction paper cut out in the shapes of circles and semicircles, other construction paper, scissors, glue, pencil, crayons

  • Students can create their very own David and think of school rules with this activity.
  • Give each student a Make a David template along with precut circle and semicircle shapes. You may use this activity to practice following directions by modeling each step to create David’s face, or challenge students to work independently to cut out the pieces and refer to pictures of David while gluing his face together.
  • Tell students to glue the speech bubble close to David’s mouth and think of a school rule they follow. Write the rule in the speech bubble.
  • Students can complete their craft by coloring David’s face!
