Paired Text Suggestion: Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

  • A perfect back-to-school story that lends itself to a class discussion on loving yourself and treating others with kindness.

Phonics Focus: Consonant Blends tr- and fr-

  • Tell students that sometimes consonants can be right next to each other with no vowels in between! When each letter makes its own sound, it is a consonant blend. Write down the two blends tr- and fr-. Ask students to find words that begin with the tr- consonant blend and underline the words. Have students practice saying the words aloud and hearing the sounds each consonant makes. Then direct students to find the words that begin with the blend fr-, underline each one, and say it aloud.

Hands-on Activity: Kindness Letter

Skill: writing, self-awareness

Materials: Kindness Letter skill sheet, pencil, crayons, envelope(s)

  • Students can write their own kindness tips to share with other kids!
  • Tell students they will write letters to other kids to share their own ideas about kindness. You can have students address their letter to another class or assign students a partner in their class they should write to.
  • Give each student a Kindness Letter skill sheet and pencil. Have them follow the prompts to fill out their kindness letter. Provide crayons for students to draw a picture.
  • Finally, collect letters into one big envelope to deliver to another class, or have students fold and place in an envelope to deliver their kindness tip!
