• Travel across five different Asian communities to discover children and their families welcoming a new year with their special traditions.

• Nonfiction texts can be full of interesting features. Ask students to find these features in the article and follow the directions: Underline the title of the article, circle each bold word, put a checkmark on the photo captions, draw a star on the labels at the bottom of page 2, and draw a rectangle around the sidebar. As each feature is found, discuss what information you learned from it.

Materials: Lion School Poster skill sheet, pencil, markers

• Have a class discussion about whether students would like to attend Lion School. What would Lion School be like?
• Give students the Lion School Poster skill sheet and a pencil. Tell them it’s their job to get people to come to Lion School. What do people need to know about Lion School?
• Have students refer to the issue to fill out the prompts on the poster. For the last prompt, have students think of how they would feel about going to Lion School.
• Then students can draw what Lion School would look like. How do people work together at Lion School?
