Paired Text: Pura Belpré Medal Books

  • Each year, this award is given to a Latinx children’s author/illustrator whose work best celebrates the Latinx culture. Yuyi Morales has won it six times!
  • Two of these books are Viva Frida, about the life of Frida Kahlo, and Dreamers, about the history and hope immigrants bring with them when they come to America.

Sight Word Hunt: she and what

  • Work together to find and circle every she in the issue. How many can you find? Then use a different color marker to find and circle each what!

Hands-On Activity: Make Kid-ecott Medals!

Skill: opinion writing

Materials: “My Kid-ecott Medal” skills sheet, crayons, pencils, scissors

  • Grownups give out Caldecott Medals; let kids give out Kid-ecott Medals!
  • Pass out the skills sheets and discuss kids’ favorite books. Why are they special? They might have wacky illustrations, fun rhymes, beautiful colors, or lovable characters.
  • Have kids fill out their medal and then color and cut it out.
  • Post the medals so kids can see each other’s favorites. It might inspire them to try something new!
