Paired Text: Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller

  • This story helps children understand New Year’s resolutions and how to make them.
  • Squirrel can’t think of a resolution to make. But as she helps her animal friends achieve their resolutions, she discovers her own.

Shared Writing: Goals and Habits

  • Create a T-chart. Label the left column Goals and the right column Habits.
  • Brainstorm possible goals, such as help more at home and try new foods. Then write habits to help reach each goal, such as set the table every night or taste one new food each week.
  • This can be a great lead-in to the hands-on activity below.

Hands-On Activity: Make a New Year's Hat!

Skill: self-awareness, writing

Materials: New Year’s Hat Template skill sheets, crayons, pencils, glue or tape, string, pom-poms

  • Give each child a copy of the skill sheet. Have children color in the pictures and write their habit for the new year.
  • Next, have children cut out the hat. Have them glue or tape the tab to the other side of the paper to make a cone shape. They can also add a pom-pom at the top!
  • To let children wear their hats, attach a string to each side and tie them under their chins.
